The slit I and the hole O
Room 10 is a site responsive installation with component works centralising around the theme of slits and holes. Ruptures to create portals and edges are made through processes that rely on piercing and penetration. Tactile materials such as silicone and honey hold skin-like qualities, that are both comforting and transgressive. Honey is made in the throat of bees as nectar is passed back and forth between the mouths of workers, until its consistency changes and something transformative occurs. The installation is to be enjoyed as a process of discovery, peering into cracked drawers and darkened corners where glossy, tacky, unstable surfaces meet the senses.

The beds in the brothel are made with a lift up lid for the working girls to store their personal belongings out of sight. This also enables a quick turn over of the room if it is only rented for part of the day. This bed has three holes for holding and lifting.
A sheet has corresponding holes bordered with hundreds of individually tied knots.

The skin-like qualities of the materials are in relation to the artist’s own white skin. The specimen Petri dishes invert the colonial gaze by objectifying 'whiteness' and also borrow from laboratory language, colonising cultures and STD’s which are part of brothel life.
